Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Rat Causes Nine-Hour Water Supply Disruption, Sparks Amusement and Frustration
In Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, a rat caused a spark in a water pump house, cutting power and halting water supply for nine hours. The bizarre incident highlights the city’s fragile infrastructure.
Sambhajinagar| June 14, 2025: Water supply disruptions are a frequent concern for residents of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, but Friday’s interruption came with an unusual twist — a rat was the unexpected culprit.
The incident occurred at the Farola water purification center, which supplies water to the city through two main pipelines measuring 700 mm and 1200 mm in diameter. On Friday morning, a sudden power outage halted the water flow through the larger 1200 mm pipeline. Municipal officials, suspecting a technical glitch, rushed to the pump house to investigate.
What they found was both surprising and bizarre — a rat had entered the pump house and caused a short circuit, resulting in a spark that cut off the power supply. As a result, water pumping operations were disrupted, and it took nearly nine hours to complete the necessary repairs and restore water supply.
The aging infrastructure of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar’s water distribution system is already known to be vulnerable to heavy rains and strong winds. But a rodent-induced spark bringing the city’s supply to a halt left officials red-faced and residents amused, if also inconvenienced.
While water supply has now resumed, some areas may still experience delays or reduced pressure. The incident has once again highlighted the fragile state of the city’s basic utilities — and sparked conversations about the need for urgent upgrades.
