Pune| May 30, 2025: Kolhapur’s political circles were abuzz for days over the appointment of the new president of the Kolhapur District Cooperative Milk Producers Union, popularly known as Gokul. That chaos has now ended. Navid Mushrif, son of Maharashtra’s Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif, has been officially tagged as Gokul’s new chairman — marking a significant moment told by state- position political maneuvering.
What makes this development more noteworthy is the before- the- scenes part of Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Sources reveal that Fadnavis, who also holds sway as a key Mahayuti leader, intervened directly in the internal process, reshaping the outcome and reaffirming his command within the alliance. His involvement culminated in a late-night consensus meeting held at the Kolhapur District Bank’s president’s office, lasting nearly two and a half hours. A name was finalized and sealed in an envelope, which was officially opened on Friday.
Interestingly, Minister Hasan Mushrif had initially opposed his son Navid’s nomination, adding to the intrigue. But with political strategies playing out swiftly, Navid, who was reportedly abroad, was called back to Kolhapur for the announcement—signaling strong backing for his leadership within the alliance ranks.
Until the final moment, the frontrunner for the post was believed to be Shashikant Patil Chuyekar, son of Gokul’s founder Anandrao Patil Chuyekar. However, the tide turned in favor of the Mushrif camp, revealing the growing clout of Hasan Mushrif in district-level institutions. Mushrif already serves as the president of the Kolhapur District Bank, and with Gokul now under the same umbrella, his political influence among the farmer community has significantly expanded.
The strategic importance of Gokul and the District Bank cannot be overstated—they are lifelines for thousands of farmers in the region. With Mahayuti governing the state, the internal tug-of-war among Kolhapur’s local powerhouses, including senior leaders like Satej Patil and groups loyal to Mahadik, remains intense. While tensions such as Arun Dongle’s brief rebellion or the Mahadik faction’s outreach efforts did stir curiosity, the unified stand of the Gokul directors ensured a smooth transition.
