Pune | May 26, 2025: Covid infections rise again as Thane reports 11 new cases. New variants NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 are spreading. Citizens advised caution, especially those with low immunity. No need to panic yet.
Out of the 11 newly infected in Thane, one patient is being treated at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital, while six others are under care in private hospitals. This brings the total active cases in Thane to 30. Adding to the concern, a doctor from Kalwa’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital also tested positive and has been isolated within the hospital premises. Hospital Dean Dr. Rakesh Barot confirmed that the doctor is stable and receiving appropriate treatment.
A case has also been reported from Dombivli, highlighting the spread within suburban areas as well. Health officials are especially vigilant as the infection is proving more severe in individuals with low immunity and pre-existing lung diseases, according to Dr. Aniruddha Malgaonkar of Thane Municipal Corporation.
The resurgence is being linked to the JN.1 variant, which is believed to be more contagious, though not officially marked as a ‘variant of concern’ by the WHO. Most patients recover within four days, but symptoms such as fever, cough, cold, sore throat, headache, and fatigue are commonly observed.
Health departments in affected states have been asked to remain on high alert, especially government and semi-government hospitals, to ensure preparedness if the situation escalates.
