PMC to demolish dangerous buildings before May 31 if owners don’t act. It’s a timely alert, a caring step for public safety, and a proactive move to avoid monsoon tragedies.

Pune| May 19, 2025: As monsoon approaches, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has intensified its action against highly dangerous and risky buildings. Additional Commissioner Ravikant Adsul has issued a stern warning that if property owners do not voluntarily demolish buildings deemed extremely hazardous, the Corporation will take the matter into its own hands — and recover the demolition cost from the concerned owners.
For the past two months, ward-level assistant commissioners and branch engineers have been conducting a detailed survey to identify such buildings. That survey is now in its final stages, with classification and action plans ready.
This annual pre-monsoon drive aims to avoid any loss of life or property due to collapsing structures. “No compromise will be made on safety. Buildings found in the C-1 category — those extremely dangerous and unfit for habitation — will be demolished without delay,” Adsul stated.
Other buildings will be dealt with according to their risk level:
C-1: Extremely dangerous and to be immediately demolished.
C-20: Requires evacuation and repair.
C-2V: Repairable without needing evacuation.
C-3: Only minor repairs needed.
Property owners of C-1 buildings will be served notices under Section 354(1) of the Municipal Corporation Act. If there is resistance to evacuation or demolition, PMC will cut off electricity and water supplies as per government directives. Tenants and flat holders will be provided measurement certificates for their occupied areas before vacating the premises.
The Corporation has also clarified that in case of judicial stays or ongoing litigation halting construction or demolition, the relevant High Court and government circulars will guide further steps.
For residents of municipal-owned buildings marked unsafe, alternative housing will be arranged. In private buildings, as per High Court orders, relocation and evacuation fall under the responsibility of the police department.
This initiative by the PMC is not merely an administrative task — it is a vital step to prevent tragic mishaps during the rainy season. The drive stands as a clear alert to negligent owners and a sign of responsible governance that values human lives. Taking proactive steps to survey, classify, and act upon risky structures before disaster strikes is a commendable move that reflects the administration’s commitment to public safety. With lives at stake, this effort is both a timely warning and a thoughtful gesture of care for the people of Pune
