Three Dalit girls in Pune allege casteist abuse and illegal interrogation by police. Despite complaints, no FIR was filed. Rohit Pawar and Sujat Ambedkar joined victims in a 15-hour protest.
Pune | August 4, 2025: A disturbing case of caste-based harassment has emerged in Pune, where three Dalit girls have alleged that police officials subjected them to illegal interrogation and casteist abuse. The incident has drawn sharp criticism from social activists and political leaders, triggering a prolonged protest at the Pune Police Commissionerate.
The ordeal began when one of the victims, who had fled from Marathwada due to ongoing injustice, sought shelter at a friend’s residence in Pune. Soon after, a police team led by officer Prema Patil allegedly arrived without a warrant and began interrogating the girls. Shockingly, the interrogation was conducted in the absence of a female officer, violating legal protocol. During the process, the girls claim that casteist slurs were used and they were verbally abused.
Despite lodging a formal complaint, no FIR has been registered under the SC/ST Atrocities Act even after more than 24 hours. The victims, accompanied by social activists, staged a sit-in protest at the Pune Police Commissionerate for over 15 hours, but the authorities reportedly remained indifferent to their pleas.
Leaders Sujat Ambedkar and MLA Rohit Pawar reached the commissionerate late at night and stayed with the protestors till 3 a.m., demanding immediate action against the accused officers from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Kothrud police stations. Both leaders criticized the administration’s inaction and accused the police of shielding those responsible.
Rohit Pawar Demands Accountability
MLA Rohit Pawar voiced strong condemnation of the incident, stating, “The girls were mistreated and insulted by police officers who had no legal grounds or female presence during interrogation. Despite repeated demands for justice, the police are ignoring the issue. This is unacceptable.” He also demanded that a case be registered against all involved, including a retired police officer allegedly exerting pressure in a related VIP case. Pawar warned that the protest would intensify if action is not taken swiftly.
The incident has raised serious questions about police conduct and caste-based discrimination, once again highlighting the urgent need for accountability and systemic reform in law enforcement.
