Pune | May 16, 2025: A heartbreaking case from Manjari Khurd in Wagholi has once again brought to light the grim realities faced by families battling financial distress. In a shocking turn of events, a wholesale fruit seller, reportedly burdened by mounting debt, strangled his wife and then took his own life.
The departed are Nagnath Vasant Warule (42) and Ujjwala Nagnath Warule (40). The occurrence surfaced on Tuesday night. There is a registered case at Wagholi police station, and inquiries are still under progress.
According to police officials, both Nagnath and Ujjwala were in their second marriage. Nagnath had two children from his first wife, and Ujjwala had three children from her previous marriage. The couple had been living in a building owned by Nagnath’s younger brother in Wagholi. On Tuesday, Ujjwala was found unconscious, and Nagnath was discovered hanging.
Senior Inspector Yuvraj Hande and his team rushed to the spot to begin the investigation. Initial findings point to financial hardship as a possible motive.
This tragic case is not an isolated incident. Similar occurrences have been surfacing more frequently, especially among small traders and self-employed individuals who struggle to cope with economic instability, debt pressure, and the absence of adequate mental health support.
Experts say that the rising cost of living, business losses, and lack of social safety nets are pushing many individuals to the brink.
