Doctors across Navi Mumbai protested after political workers insulted Dr. Rajesh Mhatre over a morgue incident. They demand police protection, public apology, and safeguards for healthcare staff’s dignity.
Navi Mumbai | June 19, 2025: Â A massive wave of protest erupted across municipal hospitals in Navi Mumbai after Dr. Rajesh Mhatre, Superintendent of Vashi Municipal Hospital, was allegedly insulted by members of a political party. Medical professionals across the city responded strongly by wearing black ribbons at work and demanding justice and police protection for Dr. Mhatre.
The outrage stems from an incident two days ago when a video went viral, showing a contract morgue worker at Vashi Hospital allegedly demanding ₹2000 for clothing used to wrap a deceased patient. In reaction, workers from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) reportedly humiliated Dr. Mhatre by symbolically throwing a shroud over him, sparking anger in the healthcare community.
Medical officers, doctors, and staff from Nerul, Belapur, Airoli, Ghansoli, and other municipal hospitals joined hands in protest. Wearing black bands, they demanded public accountability and safety, stating that insulting a senior health official for the act of a contractual employee is deeply demoralizing for the entire medical fraternity.
The concerned morgue worker, being a contract employee, has already been relieved of duty by the Municipal Health Department, but the symbolic attack on Dr. Mhatre has crossed a professional boundary, health workers say.
- Immediate police protection for Dr. Rajesh Mhatre.
- Permanent police post on hospital premises.
- Public apology from the concerned political office bearers.
- Assurance of dignity and safety for all medical professionals.
The hospital administration has confirmed that an internal investigation is ongoing, and Vashi Police Station is preparing to file a case against those responsible for the incident. The Medical Officers’ Association has pledged to intensify protests if demands are not met soon.
This incident has sparked broader concerns about the safety of frontline healthcare workers, especially those working in public hospitals, and has reignited the call to keep politics out of patient care and hospital administration.
