Pune | June 13, 2025: A tragic monsoon accident has raised concerns about public safety near flood-prone areas in Pune. A 65-year-old woman, Shobha Manohar Mahimane, was swept away in a water-filled roadside drain while trying to cross the Bengaluru Highway near Fursungi during heavy rains on Monday evening.
Shobha, a resident of Darshan Park in Fursungi, was returning from a journey between Kolhapur and Pune. After getting off a vehicle near a highway bridge, she attempted to cross the road to catch an auto-rickshaw. In the downpour, she lost her footing and slipped into an overflowing roadside drain, which had turned into a gushing stream due to the rainfall.
Eyewitnesses immediately informed the authorities, prompting a swift rescue response. During the operation, officials discovered one of her slippers beneath the bridge — a sign confirming the spot where she went missing. Rescue teams have since expanded the search to nearby water channels, including the nalla near Prayag City and areas around Sinhagad Fire Station.
Despite efforts by the fire brigade and emergency teams, Shobha had not been found as of Tuesday morning. Officials cited strong currents and reduced visibility as major obstacles.
Authorities have appealed to citizens to avoid walking near open drains and culverts during heavy rains and emphasized the need for caution in vulnerable zones throughout the monsoon.
