Pune | 30 July, 2025: In a significant victory against terrorism, the Indian Army’s elite para commandos conducted a high-stakes operation on July 28, 2025, eliminating three terrorists in a forest area on the outskirts of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. Among the slain was Sulieman, also known as Asif, believed to be the orchestrator of the devastating April 22 Pahalgam attack that claimed 26 lives, mostly tourists, at Baisaran meadows. The operation, codenamed Mahadev, was a testament to the courage and precision of India’s security forces in their relentless fight to protect civilians and dismantle terror networks.
The operation was triggered by intelligence from a technical signal, which detected the use of a satellite phone linked to the Pahalgam attack. Acting swiftly, the Army’s 24 Rashtriya Rifles and 4 Para unit launched a surprise action, engaging the terrorists in an intense firefight around 11:30 a.m. The other two terrorists killed were Jibran, linked to a deadly attack on the Sonamarg tunnel project in October 2024 that killed seven people, including a doctor, and Hamza Afghani. The operation, which continued into the evening, reflected the security forces’ determination to neutralize threats in the region.
The encounter yielded significant recoveries, including an M4 carbine rifle, two AK rifles, and other munitions, underscoring the terrorists’ intent to cause further harm. The bodies of the slain terrorists were handed over to local police for identification and legal formalities, ensuring adherence to standard procedures. The operation’s success was a collaborative effort, with local police playing a key role in identifying the terrorists.
Following intelligence reports suggesting the presence of another terrorist group in the area, additional Army and security forces were deployed to prevent further threats. This proactive response highlights the ongoing challenges in Jammu and Kashmir, where security forces remain vigilant to protect residents and visitors alike. The operation comes in the wake of Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, targeting terror infrastructure across the border after the Pahalgam attack shook the region.
