A Facebook friendship turned fatal in Karnataka’s Mandya district. A woman was murdered by her new friend after just four days of interaction. Police have arrested the accused and launched an investigation.

Mandya, Karnataka|June 27 ,2025: In a disturbing reminder of how quickly online connections can turn tragic, a 28-year-old married woman named Preeti was allegedly murdered by a man she befriended on Facebook just four days prior. The incident took place in the Qatarghatta forest area near K.R. Pet, and the accused, Puneet, has now been arrested by the Mandya police.

Preeti, who was married and a mother of two, reportedly sent a friend request to Puneet, a resident of Karotigram, last Thursday. Within hours, their conversation began and quickly intensified.
By Sunday, Preeti had left her home in Hassan and travelled with Puneet to Mysore. The two explored the city and checked into a lodge near K.R.S, where they allegedly spent the night together.

But what began like a whirlwind romance soon took a dark turn.

According to the police, while returning from Mysore, Preeti expressed a strong desire to continue the relationship and spend more time with Puneet. However, Puneet reportedly tried to distance himself. This led to a heated argument near the remote Qatarghatta forest.

Police officials say that Preeti mocked Puneet during the confrontation, which allegedly triggered him. In a fit of rage, Puneet slapped her, causing her to fall. He then picked up a heavy stone and repeatedly struck her on the head, resulting in her immediate death.

Following the brutal killing, Puneet transported Preeti’s body to his village and buried it in his own agricultural field, believing the crime would go unnoticed.

However, within days, the police were alerted—possibly due to suspicious movement or a tip-off—and tracked and arrested Puneet. A case of murder has been registered, and the body has been recovered as part of the investigation.

Mandya SP Mallikarjuna Baladandi confirmed:

“Puneet and Preeti became friends through Facebook. She came from Hassan on Sunday and stayed with him. Later, when she insisted on continuing the relationship, it led to a quarrel and she was killed.”

Police are now further probing the digital and phone records to piece together the timeline and verify all details.

This heart-wrenching case has not only shocked the local community but also reignited conversations about the dangers of unverified online relationships, especially when they escalate quickly without knowing the other person’s intentions.
