Two men from West Bengal were arrested in Nagpur with 243 fake ₹500 notes worth ₹1.21 lakh. A spelling error in “RESERVE” helped police identify the counterfeit currency.

Mumbai | August 7, 2025: Amid rising rumors about the status of ₹500 currency notes, a startling incident has emerged from Nagpur where a racket producing fake ₹500 notes has been busted. Tehsil Police have arrested two individuals from West Bengal who were allegedly circulating counterfeit notes in the city.

The accused—Zaminrun Hussain Lokman Sheikh Hussain and Azim Tanu Sheikh—were apprehended in the Guard Line area near Mayo Hospital based on a tip-off. Police laid a trap and caught them red-handed with 243 fake ₹500 notes, amounting to a total seizure of ₹1,21,500.

According to Senior Police Inspector Shubhangi Deshmukh, the seized fake notes bear a small but crucial error that helped identify them: in the phrase “RESERVE BANK OF INDIA,” the word “RESERVE” was misspelled as “RASERVE.” Investigators noted that while the notes appeared similar to genuine ones in texture and color, the green-blue security line lacked the characteristic shine found on authentic currency.

Authorities suspect that the accused may have already released more counterfeit notes into circulation prior to their arrest. A detailed probe is underway to uncover the full extent of the racket and trace any possible network of counterfeit currency distribution.

This incident comes amid circulating social media speculation about demonetization, making the discovery of fake currency all the more concerning for the public.
