Mumbai,24th March 2025: A stand-up performance by comedian Kunal Kamra has sparked political unrest after his remarks on Maharashtra’s political leadership led to a backlash from Shiv Sena workers. The controversy escalated when a video clip of Kamra’s show Naya Bharat surfaced online, allegedly containing comments about Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Angered by the remarks, Shiv Sena workers stormed and vandalized the Habitat Comedy Club in Mumbai’s Khar area, where the performance took place.
Comedy Club Under Attack
The Habitat Comedy Club, a well-known venue for stand-up performances, issued a statement condemning the attack. “We stand for free speech and artistic expression. Acts of violence and vandalism undermine the essence of creativity,” the club stated on Instagram.
The venue, which had previously faced controversy when podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia’s remarks triggered backlash, also expressed concerns over being repeatedly targeted. “While performers are responsible for their content, venues are unfairly held accountable. For now, we are temporarily closing down to ensure a safer environment,” the statement added.
Political Outrage
Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel lodged a formal complaint against Kamra, accusing him of using derogatory language against political leaders. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray criticized the vandalism, calling it an “attack on democracy” and questioning the state’s deteriorating law and order situation.
Kamra’s Reaction
As the controversy gained momentum, Kamra took to Twitter, “ I will not apologize. What I said is what Mr. Ajit Pawar said earlier ‘. The incident has reignited debates on freedom of speech in India, with supporters defending Kamra’s right to satire, while critics demand stricter action against artists making politically sensitive remarks.
