As 65-Crore Road Revamp Plan Set in Motion Ahead of Monsoon: PMC Gears Up for Rainy Season Woes
With the monsoon approaching, Pune Municipal Corporation’s Road Department has rolled out a ₹65-crore repair plan to address recurring pothole problems. The plan includes faster tender processes, micro re-surfacing, pothole filling, jet patchers, and regional repair funds. Aimed at avoiding previous delays, this proactive approach seeks smoother roads and fewer rainy season hassles for citizens.
Pune, April 22, 2025: With the monsoon just around the corner and memories of pothole-ridden roads still fresh in the minds of citizens, the Municipal Corporation’s Road Department is stepping up with an aggressive pre-monsoon action plan. After allocating Rs 15 crore for micro re-surfacing of 50 major roads, the department is now preparing to float tenders worth Rs 65 crore for repairing both main and internal roads across the city.
Aniruddha Pawaskar, Chief of the Road Department, stated that the tender process will be expedited this year. “As per the state government’s latest order, all tenders below Rs 25 crore must be issued within 15 days. This gives us a head start to complete key repair works before the rains begin,” he said.
Why the Rush?
Every year, the city faces the same frustrating cycle—roads get patched up during the rains, but the fixes don’t last. Potholes return, stones come loose, and the city incurs higher costs due to recurring repair work. With the Meteorological Department forecasting heavy rains this season too, the Road Department has no intention of being caught off guard. Typically, the process of issuing work orders after budget approval drags on for two to three months. But not this time. The Corporation has already cleared the Detailed Cost Report (DCR), and in a recent Preliminary Calculation Committee meeting, green-lit roadwork worth Rs 65 crore.
Where Will the Money Go?
- Rs 9 crore for micro re-surfacing to smooth out key roads
- Rs 1 crore for cold mix and hot mix material to fill potholes
- Rs 5 crore for advanced jet patchers for long-lasting repairs
- Rs 2.4 crore allocated to each regional office for post-excavation roadwork
- Rs 1.1 crore per regional office for emergency pothole repairs
The tender process for these projects is already underway, ensuring quicker execution than in previous years.
A Road Ahead Without Bumps?
While the city’s roads have long been a sore spot during monsoons, the proactive steps taken this year hint at a smoother journey ahead—quite literally. Whether this Rs 65-crore mission truly holds back the flood of potholes remains to be seen, but for now, citizens can take some comfort in knowing the wheels are already
