Five Arrested in Pune for ₹28 Lakh Fake Currency Racket
Pune Police arrested five individuals involved in a ₹28 lakh counterfeit currency racket. The group, operating in various city areas, sold fake ₹200 and ₹500 notes, using specialist materials for production.
Pune, April 29, 2025: Pune Police have arrested five individuals in connection with a large counterfeit money operation involving fake ₹200 and ₹500 notes, valued at ₹28 lakh. The investigation began after a suspicious transaction involving counterfeit ₹200 notes at Kotak Mahindra Bank’s Shivajinagar branch on earlier this month on April 17.
The investigation soon revealed a widespread scam. Police arrested five suspects: Manisha Thanekar, Bharati Gawand, Sachin Yamgar, Naresh Shetty, and Prabhu Googlejeddi. The group was reportedly selling ₹2 lakh worth of counterfeit notes for ₹1 lakh, running a high-risk business to generate profits. The counterfeit operation involved sophisticated techniques, with the group acquiring specialist ink, paper, and other supplies for the job.
Their activities spanned multiple Pune areas, including Yerawada, Chinchwad, Gahunje, and Lohegaon. The breakthrough came when Thanekar, who often borrowed money from financial institutions, accidentally passed on fake currency to a depositor. Following this, Gawand was arrested, and Yamgar was apprehended after others implicated her.
Further interrogation led the police to a supplier named “Kolhe,” who was identified as Naresh Shetty. Shetty had been running the counterfeit operation from his home in Lohegaon. During the raid, police seized ₹4 lakh in fake notes, counterfeit printing materials, ink, and ₹2 lakh in real cash. Some of the fake notes were found to be incomplete, printed only on one side.
With teams deployed to track more gang members, the scope of the racket became clearer, and the investigation continues under the supervision of DCP Sandeep Singh, with Senior PI Chandrashekhar Sawant and Police Inspector Mahesh Bolkotgi overseeing the operation.
