MLA Gopichand Padalkar demands cash rewards for villagers who stop religious conversions, calls for demolishing illegal places of worship, and sparks outrage by likening missionaries to pythons during a protest in Sangli.
Sangli | June 18: BJP MLA Gopichand Padalkar has stirred controversy with his strong remarks and demands against alleged cases of Christian religious conversions in rural Maharashtra. While addressing a gathering during a torch march protest in Gundewadi, Sangli, Padalkar demanded strict action and monetary incentives for villagers who help curb religious conversions.
The protest was organized following the suicide of 7-month pregnant Rituja Rajge, which Padalkar claimed was linked to pressure for religious conversion. The incident has sparked emotional reactions and political rhetoric in the region.
In a fiery speech, Padalkar compared Christian missionaries to “pythons” and accused them of predatory conversion tactics. He also referenced historical figures, saying, “Rituja is the daughter of Sambhaji Maharaj’s thoughts. Like Sambhajiraje, she chose death over changing her faith.”
He appealed to reward villagers who prevent conversions by offering cash prizes ranging from ₹2 to ₹11 lakh, likening the incentive model to that of bullock cart races. Padalkar added, “If someone stops conversions, I’ll handle the police—don’t be afraid.”
Taking his speech a step further, Padalkar demanded that the District Collector, Police Chief, and Zilla Parishad CEO immediately publish a list of illegal places of worship. “Demolish these on the third day,” he warned. “If that happens, we’ll felicitate 10,000 citizens publicly. Otherwise, prepare for mass opposition.”
He also alleged misuse of reservation benefits, claiming that some individuals working in government posts under Hindu identity are secretly practicing other religions. “Dismiss such employees,” he urged.
While his statements have resonated with some sections, critics argue that such aggressive posturing can inflame communal tensions and polarize communities. Legal experts have raised concerns about the threats against religious minorities and whether Padalkar’s remarks violate constitutional rights and law enforcement norms.
As the matter gains momentum, administrative silence is drawing attention, while civil society and rights groups have begun questioning the language and legality of the statements.
