Ahead of Dahi Handi, Maharashtra government insures 1.5 lakh Govindas with ₹10 lakh cover. Recognized as an adventure sport, the scheme ensures safety during risky human pyramid formations.
Pune | 25 August, 2025: With the Dahi Handi festival just around the corner, the Maharashtra government has taken a major step for the safety of over 1.5 lakh Govindas participating in the celebrations this year. Declaring Dahi Handi an adventure sport, the state has now announced an insurance scheme that offers coverage up to ₹10 lakh per Govinda.
In this unique festival, human pyramids are formed to reach and break a handi (pot) suspended high above the ground—often resulting in accidents. Recognizing the risk and intensity involved, the government has ensured that all Govindas are insured across six stages of injury or fatality.
Here’s a breakdown of the insurance benefits:
- ₹10 lakh in case of death during Dahi Handi.
- ₹10 lakh in case of permanent disability or loss of both eyes/limbs.
- ₹5 lakh for loss of one eye, hand or leg.
- Up to ₹1 lakh for injuries sustained during participation.
The state government will bear the entire premium for all registered Govindas. The Maharashtra State Govinda Association has been assigned responsibilities like training, health check-ups, and team coordination.
The festival will be celebrated on August 16 this year, and the move has been widely welcomed as a progressive and responsible decision to ensure the well-being of participants in one of Maharashtra’s most culturally vibrant traditions.
