With road widening work redefining the cityscape, the municipal corporation is going all out to maintain its green cover. Junior engineers have been instructed to plant and care for trees cut during these operations in order to establish ecological balance in the face of urban growth. With the monsoons on the way, the civic body has also ordered the electricity and water supply departments to accelerate road excavation repairs, an indication of an overall methodology of infrastructure and environmental control.

Pune| May 17, 2025: The municipal corporation’s road department is in charge of several expansion schemes, which involve cutting down or transplanting trees that come in the way of new alignments. Environmentalists have objected to the loss of green cover on grounds of insufficient measures to plant or look after new trees. A measure of caution has thus been undertaken by the municipal corporation to allay these fears. As part of its “Mission 32” project, the civic body is identifying tree-planting along 32 major routes, such as important roads like Nagar Road, Solapur Road, Pashan Road, Magarpatta Road, Baner Road, Sangamwadi Road, Airport VIP Road, Karve Road, Paud Road, and Satara Road.
Junior engineers are now directly accountable for planting new trees and taking care of their survival, especially during the initial critical growing phase. Assistant engineers will monitor compliance, and executive and superintendent engineers have to provide monthly progress reports. The civic body has directed the planning and reporting of tree planting along both sides of identified roads by May 19, with follow-up action to be taken forthwith. This system of accountability is intended to avoid the depletion of the city’s green cover and foster sustainable urban development.
Apart from planting trees, the municipal corporation is also clamping down on road excavation lags. The electricity department, laying service lines, has been ordered to finish all digging work by May 15 and repair damaged roads as early as possible. In order to shield infrastructure from rains, no excavation permits will be issued between June 1 and September 30. These are a reflection of the civic body’s efforts at preventing disruptions with a focus on commuter as well as ecological requirements.
The “Mission 32” program emphasizes the need to balance development with environmental conservation. By making engineers responsible for the maintenance of trees, the municipal corporation is attending to longstanding issues of ecological degradation. The instruction to undertake excavation repairs in coordination also ensures that roads will be safe and operational as the monsoon approaches.
This green initiative is a bright direction towards city planning that is sustainable. By incorporating tree planting into road construction projects and imposing strict timeframes for repair, the city is leading the way in civic responsibility. As city engineers now plant and tend saplings, citizens can expect to live in a greener, stronger cityscape that is in harmony with nature
