Red alert in Pune, Palghar, and Chandrapur as heavy rains swell dam levels. Major discharges from Khadakwasla, Mulshi, and Kasarsai dams prompt public warnings to avoid riverbeds and low-lying areas.

Mumbai | July 26, 2025 — Torrential rains continue to batter Maharashtra, severely impacting multiple districts, including Pune, which has now been placed under a red alert along with Palghar and Chandrapur. The relentless downpour over the past few days has significantly increased water storage levels in the region’s major dams, prompting precautionary water releases and widespread advisories for citizens.

In Pune, the Khadakwasla dam system — a vital water source for the city — has reached 85.20% capacity, storing 24.84 TMC of water. This marks a notable increase from the same time last year, when the storage was 22.25 TMC or 76.32%. The system includes the Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon, and Temghar dams. Currently, Varasgaon (11.52 TMC), Panshet (9.23 TMC), Khadakwasla (1.13 TMC), and Temghar (2.95 TMC) are all reporting significant inflows, with discharge from Varasgaon already underway.

The Mulshi Dam is also under close watch, now at 83.20% capacity. Officials have increased discharge into the Mula River from 8,900 to 12,200 cusecs as of 9 AM, warning that adjustments will be made based on rainfall intensity. Citizens have been urged not to venture near riverbeds and to relocate animals and belongings from low-lying areas.

Similarly, discharge from Kasarsai Dam has risen sharply from 414 to 1,400 cusecs to manage rising levels in Kasarsai Nala. Authorities have issued strong warnings, urging residents in downstream and low-lying regions to stay alert and observe safety protocols.
