In a big drug haul, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has detained two passengers at Pune International Airport for bringing narcotics into the country from Bangkok. Based on a tip-off, DRI officials from its Pune and Mumbai zonal units intercepted the duo when they arrived and confiscated a stock of high-quality drugs.

Pune | May 15, 2025: Searching their check-in luggage, officials found 11 vacuum-pouched bags filled with over 9.8 kg of hydroponics cannabis, a potent type of marijuana cultivated through a highly advanced water-based method. Further investigation revealed 500 grammes of hashish and more hydroponics cannabis from them.
A third accomplice, also an Indian national from Mumbai, was arrested later. All three individuals have been booked under the stringent provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
The officials verified that the seized pharmaceuticals have market worth roughly ₹10.3 crore. The DRI also pointed out that hydroponics marijuana smuggling via Pune airport is not the first one; rather, he indicated that luxury class drugs smuggling on international jet lines is a rising trend.
The recent hydromarijuana seizure worth more than ₹10 crore is reflective of the evolving nature of drug smuggling in India. No longer confined to conventional contraband, syndicates are now importing ultra-sophisticated, designer drugs grown abroad and smuggled in with finesse.
This incident must be an eye-opener—not only for enforcement agencies, but also for airport and border surveillance authorities. Greater investment in AI-based baggage scanning, canine squads, and cross-border intelligence sharing is now imperative, not a choice.
Moreover, public knowledge about new-generation medications and their deceptive packaging is crucial. Fighting drugs is about being one step ahead in technology, policy, and prevention, not only about seizures.
