On July 2 in Birmingham, Shubman Gill’s unbeaten 114 guided India to 310/5 against England. A distraction attempt by bowler Brydon Carse stirred controversy but failed to break Gill’s focus.
Birmingham, July 2 – In a gripping start to the second Test match between India and England at Edgbaston, Team India ended Day 1 at 310/5, thanks to a commanding unbeaten century by Shubman Gill (114) and a steady 41 by Ravindra Jadeja.
After losing the toss, India was put in to bat by England captain Ben Stokes. Despite early setbacks with the dismissals of KL Rahul and Karun Nair, Gill anchored the innings with composure, building a solid partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal.

The match also saw a controversial moment in the 34th over, when England pacer Brydon Carse seemingly tried to distract Shubman Gill mid-delivery. Sensing the unsporting behavior, Gill backed off the crease, causing Carse to halt the ball. The incident sparked sharp reactions online, with many slamming the bowler for attempting to break Gill’s focus unfairly.
Despite the pressure, Gill held his ground and brought up his second century in the series, keeping India in a strong position after the first day of play.
The five-match series currently stands at 1-0 in England’s favor, making this Test crucial for India’s comeback hopes.
