Indian Railways to finalize reservation charts 8 hours before departure, boosting clarity for passengers. From July 1, Tatkal bookings will require OTP-based authentication, curbing misuse by agents. Major PRS upgrade ahead.
India| June 30 ,2025: Indian Railways is set to implement a significant reform in its ticket reservation system that aims to enhance passenger convenience and reduce last-minute hassles. Starting soon, the final reservation chart for trains will now be prepared eight hours before the train’s departure—doubling the current time window of four hours.
This move will offer much-needed clarity to waitlisted passengers, who will now know their ticket status well in advance, giving them ample time to make alternate travel arrangements if needed.
New Timings for Morning Trains
As per the revised schedule, for trains scheduled to depart before 2 PM, the reservation list will be finalized the previous night at 9 PM. This adjustment is expected to benefit thousands of travelers who often struggle with last-minute confirmation anxiety.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has personally reviewed and approved this change, as part of broader efforts to modernize and digitize passenger services.
PRS Upgrade to Handle Surge in Demand
In a massive tech upgrade, the Passenger Reservation System (PRS) is also being scaled up. Ticket booking capacity will leap from 32,000 to 1.5 lakh tickets per minute, while the system’s query handling capability will grow tenfold to 40 lakh queries per minute.
The new PRS interface will be multilingual and user-friendly, offering features like seat selection and special categories (including for persons with disabilities, students, and patients).
Tatkal Booking Goes Secure from July 1
A big change in Tatkal ticket bookings is also set to roll out from July 1, 2025. Only authenticated users will be allowed to book Tatkal tickets, with mandatory OTP-based verification using Aadhaar or other government IDs (linked via DigiLocker).
This step aims to curb misuse by private agents and ensure fair access to genuine travelers
