In a stunning upset during the sixth round, India’s D. Gukesh defeated world number one Magnus Carlsen for the first time in a classical chess match. Despite the loss, Carlsen retains the top spot with 9.5 points, while Gukesh climbs to third place with 8.5 points.
After the game, Gukesh humbly admitted that he did not play his best and believed defeat was almost certain. However, a crucial mistake by Carlsen turned the tides in his favor. “In that position, 99 times out of 100, I would lose, but today luck was on my side,” Gukesh remarked.
The match lasted nearly four hours, with Carlsen largely controlling the game. Upon realizing his blunder too late, Carlsen showed visible frustration, slamming his hands on the table. Despite this setback, Gukesh described the win as an important milestone for his progress.
