Mumbai’s first rain exposed Metro 3 flaws as Worli station flooded due to a collapsed wall. Services were suspended, passengers evacuated, and MMRC pledged safety-first repairs before resumption.

Pune | May 26, 2025: Mumbai’s much-anticipated underground Metro 3 project hit a major snag as heavy rains led to water leakage and flooding inside the Acharya Atre Chowk Worli metro station, leaving Mumbaikars shocked and stranded.
The incident occurred due to the collapse of a temporary water-retaining wall near the under-construction entry/exit point on Annie Besant Road, following a sudden inflow from a nearby sewage drain. This wall was meant to protect the structure from water ingress. Unfortunately, with just the first monsoon showers, it gave way—flooding the station with water, mud, and debris, making parts of the station resemble a waterfall.
Travelers were observed trapped in muddy situations, with some requiring help to be rescued. Metro authorities promptly halted operations between Worli and Acharya Atre Chowk as a precautionary step. Nonetheless, services between Aarey JVLR and Worli are still functioning, as stated by the MMRC.
Officials from Disaster Management, Engineering, and Security departments have been deployed on site, and emergency repairs are underway. The MMRC has issued an apology, stating:
“Passenger safety is our top priority. Services will resume only when all systems are restored.”
The situation has sparked serious concerns about the readiness and resilience of Mumbai’s underground metro infrastructure, especially as the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro 3 line was hailed as a game-changer for Mumbai’s traffic woes.
This incident underscores a worrying reality: if the very first rain can halt an underground metro, how will it stand up to Mumbai’s full monsoon fury? Mumbaikars now question whether safety protocols, drainage planning, and construction quality were compromised in the rush to roll out the project.
