Jaishankar told Parliament Trump had no role in the India-Pakistan ceasefire post-Operation Sindoor. India acted independently after Pahalgam attack, gaining global support and firmly rejecting any US mediation claims.
New Delhi | 29th July, 2025: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar firmly clarified in Parliament on Monday that former US President Donald Trump had no role in brokering the India-Pakistan ceasefire that ended Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack.
Amid a charged debate in Parliament, Jaishankar addressed widespread speculation and Trump’s repeated public claims of mediating peace between India and Pakistan. “There was no phone call between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Trump between April 22 (when the Pahalgam attack occurred) and June 17 (the date of the ceasefire),” he stated.
Only 3 out of 193 UN countries supported Pakistan, while the overwhelming global community backed India’s strong stance against terrorism, Jaishankar emphasized.
He also disclosed that on May 9, PM Modi had warned US Vice President Vance of a possible major Pakistani attack on India, following which diplomatic pressure mounted on Pakistan. Shortly before Pakistan’s military contacted India to seek a ceasefire, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had informed India that “the Pakistanis are ready to talk.”
“The red line was crossed in Pahalgam. Our response needed to be decisive,” Jaishankar added, detailing India’s strong diplomatic actions, including suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty—a lifeline for Pakistan’s agriculture.
While Jaishankar addressed the house with gravity, Opposition members repeatedly interrupted, prompting Union Home Minister Amit Shah to step in and defend his colleague’s statement.
India has categorically rejected Trump’s mediation claims and reiterated its stand that Pakistan’s illegal occupation of Jammu & Kashmir is a bilateral issue not open to third-party interference. PM Modi had reportedly conveyed this position directly to US leadership in mid-June.
