Jayant Patil expressed his wish to step down as NCP (Sharad Pawar) state chief, urging new leadership. Sharad Pawar acknowledged his role, confirming Patil will continue until local body elections.
Mumbai | June 11, 2025: In a significant political development, Jayant Patil, state president of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction), publicly expressed his willingness to step down and make way for a new generation of leadership. Speaking at the party’s anniversary function, Patil said, “Sharad Pawar gave me an opportunity for seven years. Now it’s time to give new faces a chance.”
The announcement stirred immediate reactions at the event, with party workers vocally opposing his resignation. Patil, however, maintained that the final decision rests with Sharad Pawar. “Ultimately, the party belongs to Pawar Saheb. He should decide,” he said, amid slogans and emotional appeals from attendees.
Patil also touched on the party’s recent electoral setbacks, particularly in the Maharashtra Assembly polls, where the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance suffered unexpected losses. “We lost many seats by slim margins. This is not just political defeat—it’s a battle of ideologies: ‘Tukaram vs. Nathuram’. We must prepare to hit the streets again,” he told party workers.
In response, Sharad Pawar praised Patil’s work and hinted that while change is welcome, Patil will remain state chief for a few more months—likely until after local body elections. “Jayant Patil has served the party effectively. Though he wants to step aside, let us all stand behind him,” Pawar said.
Pawar also emphasized the need for new leadership at the grassroots level, urging the emergence of fresh faces across districts and talukas, and particularly encouraging women’s participation. “Elections are nearing. Whether we contest alone or in alliance, will be decided with inputs from district leadership,” he added.
This announcement is expected to trigger a leadership churn within the party as it prepares for local body elections in the coming months.
