Pune | June 03, 2025: Veteran actor Kamal Haasan is facing backlash over his recent comments on the Kannada language, which have triggered widespread outrage across Karnataka. At a promotional event for his upcoming film Thug Life, Haasan claimed that the Kannada language “originated from Tamil.” The remark quickly escalated into a full-blown controversy, drawing criticism from political leaders, pro-Kannada groups, and film industry stakeholders.
In response, the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce has issued a stern warning: unless Kamal Haasan issues a public apology, his film Thug Life will not be allowed to release in the state. Chamber President M. Narasimhalu emphasized that the issue has gone beyond cinema. “This is about the pride of Karnataka and the Kannada language. If he doesn’t apologise, the film simply won’t release here,” he stated. “Indeed political parties and Kannada activists are demanding an reason.”
The statement also drew sharp criticism from Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who said, “Kannada has a rich and independent history. Kamal Haasan should educate himself before making such remarks.” BJP state President B.Y. Vijayendra echoed the sentiment, condemning the actor’s “ arrogance ” and calling his words an insult to Kannada pride. He stressed that artists, in particular, should respect all languages, especially when they have worked across linguistic boundaries.
In the wake of rising pressure, Kamal Haasan has now moved the Karnataka High Court, filing a petition to ensure that Thug Life is released in the state without disruption. However, until an official apology is made, opposition remains firm from both the film fraternity and Kannada cultural organizations.
