Actress Ketki Chitale has stirred controversy with remarks downplaying Marathi pride, questioning the need to speak Marathi, and criticizing the demand for classical status—sparking strong reactions from the public and political circles.
Mumbai | 25 July, 2025: Actress Ketki Chitale, known for her provocative remarks, has once again ignited controversy—this time by questioning the ongoing campaign to prioritize the Marathi language. Weighing in on the heated Marathi-Hindi language debate, she asked, “Are you going to get hurt if someone doesn’t speak in Marathi?”—a comment that has sparked outrage on social media and among political circles.
In her statement, Chitale challenged the insistence on speaking Marathi in Maharashtra, stating that such pressure reflects “insecurity.” She further questioned, “Will Marathi be damaged if someone in front of you doesn’t speak the language?” Her remarks have been widely criticized as dismissive toward efforts to promote and preserve the Marathi language.
Chitale also opposed the criteria set in 2024 for granting classical language status to Marathi, Bengali, and Assamese. She argued that this pursuit stems from insecurity and added that “even Hindi and Urdu haven’t received classical status, but no one is fighting for it.” According to her, achieving classical status doesn’t bring real change—rather, it exposes cultural anxiety.
As reactions pour in, many see Chitale’s comments as undermining the importance of language preservation and cultural pride, especially at a time when language identity is becoming a sensitive topic across India.
