IMD warns of intense rainfall in Konkan, Western Maharashtra, and South Gujarat. Ghats, dams raise flood risk. Citizens in Palghar, Pune, Nashik, and Vidarbha advised to stay alert for next 48 hours.

Mumbai | June 25, 2025 – While Mumbai and its suburbs have witnessed a brief respite from heavy downpours, several districts across Konkan, Western Maharashtra, and South Gujarat are now on high alert due to the forecast of extremely heavy rainfall in the next 24 to 48 hours.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), districts like Thane, Kalyan-Dombivli, Palghar, Raigad, and parts of the Konkan coast are already receiving intense rainfall. With water levels in ghats and reservoirs rising rapidly, dams have started releasing water, increasing the flood risk in downstream areas.

IMD has flagged the next 24 hours as critical for several districts in South Konkan, Western Maharashtra, and South Gujarat. The following regions are likely to experience heavy to extremely heavy rainfall:

  • Maharashtra: Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Pune Ghats, Satara, Kolhapur, Nashik Ghats
  • Gujarat: Valsad, Navsari, Surat, Vadodara, Ahmedabad, and parts of South Gujarat

These areas face a high probability of flash floods due to the intense rainfall and runoff from hilly and dam areas.

  • Mumbai: After heavy rain on June 25, moderate rainfall is expected over the next two days, providing temporary relief.
  • Western Maharashtra: Ghat regions of Pune, Satara, Kolhapur, and Nashik are likely to receive heavy rainfall. However, the plains may only see light to moderate showers.
  • Marathwada: Rain accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms has been forecast in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Parbhani, Nanded, and Hingoli. Scattered rainfall is expected in Beed, Latur, and Dharashiv.
  • Vidarbha: The IMD has predicted thunderstorms with heavy showers in Nagpur, Amravati, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Akola, Wardha, and Washim for the next three days.

Authorities have asked citizens in low-lying and dam-adjacent areas to stay alert and avoid riverbanks. Local bodies are on standby with emergency teams, especially in districts vulnerable to landslides and flash floods.

With the monsoon intensifying along the Western Ghats and coastal belt, the administration is also keeping a close watch on dam discharge levels to avoid urban flooding, especially during the ongoing Wari pilgrimage and Ashadhi season.
