Second Life Lost in Purandar Airport Turmoil, Public Anger Boils Over
Land survey for Purandar Airport has begun amid protests from local farmers. While officials aim to acquire 2,673 hectares of land, farmers have halted the survey, citing lack of consent.
Pune, May 03, 2025: The long-awaited land survey for the proposed international airport in Purandar taluka began on Friday, kicking off the land acquisition process in the project-affected villages. The survey, scheduled to be done in phases, began in Ekhatpur village and is likely to cover the seven villages—Vanpuri, Udachiwadi, Kumbharvalan, Ekhatpur, Munjawadi, Khanwadi, and Pargaon—identified for the airport’s construction. The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) recently issued a notification regarding this, followed by a meeting under the Divisional Commissioner to discuss land acquisition and appoint officers for the process.
The entire land area to be purchased is 2,673 hectares in the seven villages. The district administration wants to finalize the land acquisition in six months. Before this, a joint survey of the land will be carried out, and the Land Records Department has already paid the survey fee. Affected farmers have been notified for the count, and modern technologies like ‘Course’ and ‘Rover’ will be used to expedite the process.
However, the survey was met with resistance from local farmers. On the first day, a drone survey was halted by protesters in Sat Garva, who demanded that the land survey be stopped until their consent was obtained. Tensions escalated between government officials, including Sub-Divisional Officer Varsha Landge and Land Acquisition Officer Kalyan Pandhare, and the protesters, leading to verbal clashes. The farmers also blocked survey vehicles, questioning why the land was being counted without their agreement. During the protest, Radhika Memane, a resident of Pargaon, was hospitalized after suffering a heatstroke.
The survey is set to continue, but with increasing opposition from the locals, the process could face delays. The government, however, has urged the public to cooperate for the project’s success, despite the mounting tensions.
