Lost Legacy of Maratha Glory: Raghujiraje Bhosale's Sword Goes Under the Hammer in London
The ancient sword of Raghujiraje Bhosale, probably taken away by the British, is going under the hammer in London. The Bhosale clan wants it back, describing it as a priceless Maratha legacy and symbol of pride.
Pune, April 29, 2025: The ancient sword once carried by Maratha stalwart Raje Raghuji Bhosale, who ruled Nagpur with bravery for 21 years, is now going to be auctioned in London. It’s no ordinary weapon—it’s an exquisitely made “khanda” with a jeweled hilt and green sheath, symbolizing the rich tradition and battle pride of the Bhosale clan.
As per UK-based antique weapons auction house “Sathbeej”, the auction for the extremely rare artifact has opened at 3 PM IST today(Tuesday, April 29). The sword is estimated to have been used during the period when Raghuji Bhosale was instrumental in the growth of the Maratha Empire in Central India.
But behind this blade lies a tale of betrayal and loss. Between 1853 and 1864, under British dominance, Shrimant Raje Mudhoji Maharaj Bhosale II (Appasaheb Maharaj) led a valiant resistance against colonial forces.
During that conflict, the British looted the Nagpur Bhosale treasury, seizing weapons, ornaments, and royal possessions. It is suspected that Raghuji’s sword was taken during this plunder—either officially or secretly carried away by a British officer, later sold or passed down.
Now, this valuable relic has turned up on a foreign site, away from its native land. Raje Mudhoji Bhosale has been open in a request for its return, saying, “This sword is part of our heritage—it belongs to us.”
The legendary sword of Raghuji Bhosale, reportedly seized during British rule, is set to be auctioned in London. The Bhosale clan has called for its return as an invaluable artifact of Maratha pride and heritage.
