LPG tanker falls off bridge near Hatkhamba on Mumbai-Goa highway, causing a gas leak and 10-hour traffic halt; residents evacuated, small vehicles diverted, heavy vehicles stranded, rescue operations underway.
Mumbai | 29 July, 2025: A major accident took place early this morning on the Mumbai-Goa highway near Hatkhamba village in Ratnagiri district, when an LPG gas tanker fell off a bridge, triggering a gas leak and panic in the surrounding area. The incident led to the evacuation of residents from Vani Peth as a safety measure.
In the wake of the accident, vehicular traffic on the Mumbai-Goa highway has been completely suspended for over 10 hours. This marks the second such accident on the route in the past two months, adding to public concern. Long lines of heavy vehicles are stranded on both sides, while smaller vehicles are being diverted via the Bavandi–Pali alternate route. Officials estimate that it may take another 4 to 5 hours to restore traffic flow.
Responding swiftly, the MIDC rescue team managed to temporarily control the gas leak. Efforts are currently underway to upright the overturned tanker and transfer the remaining LPG to another tanker to ensure safety.
District Collector and District Superintendent of Police Nitin Bagate visited the accident site. Bagate confirmed that no traffic will resume until the road is declared fully safe. Authorities have appealed to commuters to follow diversions and cooperate until the situation is stabilized.
