Lucknow | June 16, 2025: Just days after the devastating Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad shook the nation, another major aviation mishap was narrowly averted at Lucknow Airport on Sunday morning. A Saudia Airlines flight (SV 3112), carrying around 250 Hajj pilgrims from Jeddah, landed amid panic as sparks and smoke were spotted emanating from one of its wheels.
According to officials, the aircraft touched down around 6:30 AM, and as soon as the wheels hit the runway, bright sparks flashed from beneath the aircraft, followed by smoke. The airport staff, already on high alert in the wake of recent events, acted swiftly and efficiently, initiating emergency procedures.
As emergency teams rushed to the spot, the aircraft was steered to the taxiway, where all passengers were safely evacuated. Despite no injuries being reported, panic gripped the passengers once they realized what had happened. For many, especially those returning from Hajj, the moment was terrifying.
This near-miss comes just four days after the catastrophic crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, where an Air India flight bound for London met with a tragic fate just moments after takeoff. The aircraft crashed into a medical college campus, claiming the lives of 241 passengers and injuring the only survivor, who remains in critical condition. Additionally, the impact extended beyond the plane — dozens near the crash site also lost their lives, pushing the death toll beyond 270.
The Ahmedabad crash is now being termed as one of the darkest chapters in Indian aviation history. Initial investigations have pointed to a technical malfunction, though detailed probes are underway.
While no lives were lost in the Lucknow incident, it has reignited concerns over flight safety in India. In light of the Ahmedabad crash and now this terrifying close call, questions are being raised about technical inspections, aircraft maintenance, and crisis preparedness across airports.
The emotional weight of the Ahmedabad tragedy is still heavy on the country, and Sunday’s incident in Lucknow only served to intensify that collective anxiety.
