Mumbai, March 31, 2025 – In a landmark decision, the Maharashtra government has officially approved e-bike taxi services, revolutionizing the state’s urban transportation sector. This move is expected to boost sustainable mobility and generate employment opportunities while reducing congestion in major cities.
E-Bike Taxis Set to Operate in Key Maharashtra Cities
The new policy permits e-bike taxis in cities with a population exceeding one lakh, allowing ride-hailing giants like Uber, Ola, and Rapido to expand their operations. The initiative is expected to create around 20,000 jobs statewide, with nearly half of them concentrated in Mumbai.
Guidelines for E-Bike Taxi Operations
To ensure efficiency and safety, the Maharashtra government has established stringent rules for e-bike taxi services:
- Operators must own a minimum of 50 e-bikes to qualify.
- The maximum travel distance for each ride is 15 kilometers.
- Mandatory GPS tracking, emergency contact systems, and speed restrictions for all e-bike taxis.
- Riders and passengers must have comprehensive insurance coverage.
- The policy promotes women’s inclusion, encouraging female riders for female passengers to enhance safety and comfort.
A Victory for Sustainable Transport
The approval marks a significant shift from the initial rejection in 2022, signaling the government’s commitment to promoting electric vehicles (EVs) and eco-friendly mobility solutions. The initiative aligns with global trends toward green transportation and cleaner urban transit.
Challenges and Opposition from Auto Unions
Despite its potential benefits, the approval of e-bike taxis has sparked opposition from auto-rickshaw and taxi unions. Critics argue that classifying bikes as transportation vehicles could increase road safety risks and impact existing public transport operators. However, proponents believe electric two-wheelers will reduce pollution and traffic congestion in cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur.
Future of Mobility in Maharashtra
With the rapid expansion of ride-hailing ecosystems powered by electric vehicles, Maharashtra is moving toward a more sustainable urban transport model. The e-bike taxi initiative is expected to enhance last-mile connectivity, making commutes more efficient while supporting the state’s environmental goals.
