Maharashtra to Expand Smart Postpaid Electricity Meters; 10% Bill Discount During Solar Hours, Says CM Fadnavis

Maharashtra

Maharashtra has installed 38 lakh smart electricity meters, offering a 10% discount during solar hours. CM Fadnavis confirmed reduced tariffs, ₹29,000 crore funding, and assured fair access to power in rural zones.

Mumbai | July 10, 2025:
Maharashtra is moving ahead with the installation of smart postpaid electricity meters, with a focus on modernizing its power infrastructure and improving transparency in billing. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis shared updates about the ongoing project during a discussion in the Legislative Council, responding to questions and suggestions raised by Members Milind Narvekar, Anil Parab, and Praveen Darekar.

Under the new initiative, 27,826 feeder meters and 38 lakh smart consumer meters have already been installed across the state. A major benefit for consumers is a 10% discount on electricity bills during solar power hours, aimed at encouraging power usage during periods of surplus solar generation.

Fadnavis also announced that, for the first time, electricity tariffs are being reduced in Maharashtra — a move welcomed by consumers across income groups. He added that installing these meters is not mandatory, easing concerns raised by some quarters about potential compulsion.

₹29,000 Crore Support from Centre

The Chief Minister said Maharashtra has received ₹29,000 crore from the Central Government for this smart meter initiative. After a competitive bidding process, four companies have been awarded the contract for meter installation and maintenance. These meters automatically calculate each unit of consumption, ensuring accurate billing and minimizing errors. Fadnavis emphasized that there will be no increase in bills due to this transition.

Power Access to Marginal Areas

Fadnavis also addressed concerns about electricity supply to Koliwade (fisherfolk settlements) and forest land habitations. He assured that a joint departmental meeting would be conducted soon, and a proposal will be submitted to the court to streamline power delivery in these sensitive zones.

With this push toward smart technology and solar optimization, Maharashtra is aligning itself with national energy goals — aiming for both sustainability and consumer benefit.
