Pune| May 28, 2025 : In a symbolic and historic initiative, the Maharashtra government has vowed to pursue the official recognition of Swatantryaveer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar’s barrister title, which was denied to him by the British government over a century ago.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced this during the opening of the Swatantryaveer Savarkar Study and Research Centre at Mumbai University, which took place on the eve of Savarkar’s birth anniversary. The occasion was led by Maharashtra Governor C. P. Radhakrishnan.
Savarkar had completed his legal studies at Gray’s Inn in London, but was denied the Barrister title and charter due to his refusal to pledge allegiance to the British Crown—an oath mandatory for recognition as a Barrister during colonial rule.
“This title was denied not due to academic reasons, but because Savarkar refused to compromise his nationalist principles. We are committed to bringing this long-overdue recognition home, with dignity,” said Fadnavis.
The government plans to work in coordination with Mumbai University and British legal institutions to ensure that Savarkar’s legal credentials are formally acknowledged and returned to India.
The announcement is being seen as an effort to reclaim a historical injustice and honor the legacy of one of India’s most controversial yet impactful freedom fighters.
