Four farmers died by suicide in Marathwada in a single day, raising the 2025 toll to 543. Mounting debt and distress continue to plague the region, demanding urgent government attention.
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar | July 18, 2025: The agrarian crisis in Marathwada continues to deepen, with farmer suicides refusing to slow down. In a deeply troubling development, four farmers from the region ended their lives on the same day—two in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and one each in Parbhani and Latur districts.
According to reports, 543 farmers have died by suicide in Marathwada’s eight districts between January and July 11, 2025, painting a grim picture of mounting distress in the farming community.
The latest string of tragedies includes:
- Bhagwan Sheshrao Dhakne, a farmer from Marda Gevrai in Paithan taluka, jumped into his own well to end his life.
- Lahu Bhimrao Dighule from Antarwali Khandi in the same taluka hanged himself at home, reportedly due to debt.
- In Parbhani’s Selu taluka, Sopan Gyanoba Borade of Tidi village consumed poison to end his life.
- In Latur’s Devni taluka, Shridhar Pandhari Ghogre from Gurdal village also died by suicide by hanging.
These incidents have sparked widespread concern and raised urgent questions about the government’s response to the crisis. Once again, the plight of Baliraja—the symbolic representation of the Indian farmer—has come into sharp focus. Despite loan waivers, schemes, and subsidies, the root issues of crop failure, mounting debt, and inadequate support systems remain unaddressed for many.
The alarming number of suicides demands a more empathetic and effective policy intervention to save lives and livelihoods in rural Maharashtra.
