Marathwada’s Dry Days May Soon End: Big Plans Unveiled for Water, Solar Boost
Marathwada to receive 30 TMC floodwater from Kolhapur and Sangli via Ujani Dam; floating solar project planned at Jayakwadi. CM Fadnavis promises a drought-free future with major water initiatives.
Pune, April 28, 2025: In a major step towards solving Marathwada’s long-standing drought crisis, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that floodwaters from Kolhapur and Sangli districts will soon be diverted to this parched region.
Speaking at the ‘Industry Award 2025’ event organized by the Chamber of Marathwada Industries and Agriculture, he shared that around 30 TMC of water would be channeled to Marathwada through the Ujani Dam.
The project, backed by World Bank assistance, will see tender invitations rolling out next month.
He highlighted an initiative which is the ambitious plan to reroute water from western-flowing rivers, currently draining into the sea, towards the Godavari basin.
The preparation of the detailed project report (DPR) for this major water transfer scheme, which aims to bring in 50 TMC of water, is already underway and is expected to wrap up shortly.
Adding another feather to Marathwada’s development plans, Fadnavis revealed that the Jayakwadi Dam will soon host the country’s largest floating solar power project.
Necessary approvals have begun falling into place, and a recent environmental committee visit marks another step forward for the project.
Emphasizing the water potential, the Chief Minister added that in years of significant flooding, Kolhapur and Sangli districts produce approximately 170 TMC of floodwater.
Even on an average, roughly 70 TMC is accessible — out of which, a planned 30 TMC will be set aside for Marathwada. This will be a watershed moment in ensuring water security for the region, as per him.
