MHADA officer Baburao Katre faces charges after his wife, Renu, died by suicide over his alleged corruption and harassment. Earning ₹40–50 lakh illegally, he is now absconding as investigation begins.
Mumbai |July 28, 2025: A disturbing case of alleged mental harassment and corruption has come to light from Mumbai, where the wife of a senior MHADA officer ended her life after repeated disputes over her husband’s illegal income. The incident occurred in Lokhandwala’s Raheja Complex, under the jurisdiction of Samata Nagar police station, where Renu Katre, wife of MHADA Deputy Registrar Baburao Katre, was found hanging in her apartment.
According to the FIR filed by Renu’s brother, Baburao Katre was illegally earning ₹40 to ₹50 lakh per month. Renu had consistently opposed bringing such black money home, expressing concern over its impact on their children. Allegedly, Baburao not only ignored her objections but also pressured her family—particularly her father—to help convert the black money into legal assets. When her father refused, Baburao reportedly assaulted Renu and continued the financial coercion.
The family had planned a meeting in Pune to resolve the ongoing disputes. However, Baburao abruptly refused to attend the meeting the night before, leading to a serious argument with Renu. Overwhelmed by stress and despair, she took the extreme step and was later found dead.
The Samata Nagar police have registered a case against Baburao Katre under IPC Section 306 (abetment to suicide) and other relevant sections. As of now, the accused officer is absconding, and police have launched a search operation.
Renu’s family has demanded a high-level investigation into the matter, urging authorities to deliver justice swiftly.
