A group of unidentified attackers vandalized over 20 vehicles in Pune’s Dhankawadi, spreading fear among residents. Two locals were injured while trying to stop the rampage, prompting a swift police investigation.
Pune | 23 July, 2025: On the night of July 22, 2025, the quiet streets of Pune’s Dhankawadi turned into a scene of chaos as three unidentified miscreants unleashed a two-hour rampage, vandalizing over 20 vehicles and leaving two residents injured. Between 11:45 p.m. and 1 a.m., the attackers targeted Keshav Complex, Saraswati Chowk, and Navnath Nagar, all under the Sahakar Nagar police station’s jurisdiction. The destruction included 15 auto-rickshaws, three cars, two school buses, and a Piaggio tempo, with shattered windows and smashed windshields sparking panic among families in this residential area. The incident has left the community shaken, with residents fearful of further violence.
The rampage wasn’t just about property damage. Two brave locals who attempted to intervene were assaulted, sustaining injuries that required hospital treatment. Their courage in the face of danger highlights the tight-knit spirit of Dhankawadi, where neighbors look out for one another. However, the attack has raised serious concerns about safety in a neighborhood known for its bustling yet peaceful vibe. Families are now questioning how such a brazen act could unfold under the cover of darkness, disrupting the sense of security they once took for granted.
The Sahakar Nagar police acted swiftly, arriving at the scene to conduct a panchnama and begin investigations. They are scouring CCTV footage to identify the culprits, who were armed with sticks and moved through parking areas with alarming audacity. The police suspect the attackers may be linked to local disputes, though no clear motive has been established yet. This incident follows a troubling pattern of vandalism in Pune, with similar cases reported in Bibwewadi and Pimpri-Chinchwad earlier this year, where gangs targeted vehicles to spread fear.
For Dhankawadi residents, the emotional toll is palpable. Auto-rickshaw drivers, whose livelihoods depend on their vehicles, face costly repairs, while parents worry about the safety of school buses used by their children. The community is rallying, with calls for increased night patrols and better street lighting to deter future incidents. The Pune City Traffic Police, already tackling congestion issues citywide, may need to coordinate with local stations to enhance security measures in vulnerable areas like Dhankawadi.
This midnight rampage underscores the need for stronger community policing and vigilance. As investigations continue, residents hope for swift justice to restore peace. The incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly chaos can erupt, but also of the resilience of Punekars, who are determined to reclaim their neighborhood’s safety and calm. The police’s commitment to tracking down the perpetrators offers hope that Dhankawadi can heal and move forward.
