Maharashtra is in the grip of an intensified southwest monsoon, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing critical warnings of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall from June 19 to June 22, 2025. The state, including Mumbai, Pune, Konkan, and surrounding regions, is experiencing severe weather, prompting Raigad district authorities to declare a school and college holiday on June 19 as a precautionary measure. The downpours, accompanied by gusty winds, began early Thursday, disrupting life across the region.
Mumbai and coastal areas like Thane, Palghar, Navi Mumbai, and Raigad have been lashed by persistent rain, with the IMD issuing an orange alert for Mumbai, predicting over 70 mm of rainfall in a single day. Low-lying areas are waterlogged, causing delays on Central and Western Railway suburban lines, stranding commuters. In Pune, early morning showers have thrown daily routines into disarray, while tourist hotspot Lonavala recorded a staggering 221 mm of rain in the last 24 hours. Pune’s annual rainfall has already hit 1,166 mm this year, dwarfing last year’s 323 mm for the same period.
The rising water levels in the Kundalika River near Roha have led Raigad District Collector Kishan Jawale to suspend educational activities in Alibag, Roha, Tala, Mahad, and Poladpur. The IMD has urged the public, especially tourists, to avoid riverbanks and hilly areas, while farmers and local authorities are on high alert due to potential impacts on agriculture and infrastructure. Former IMD head Anupam Kashyapi told Pune Times Mirror, “Intermittent moderate to heavy showers are expected in Pune city, with intense to very intense spells in Mumbai and the ghat regions of Pune and Satara. The monsoon remains vigorous over northwest and central Maharashtra.”
The regional forecast paints a grim picture: Konkan, including Palghar, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri, faces very heavy showers on June 19, with Mumbai bracing for persistent rain and thunderstorms. The Western Ghats, encompassing Pune, Satara, Kolhapur, and Nashik, will see heavy rain on June 19, tapering to moderate levels through June 22. North Maharashtra’s Nashik, Dhule, Nandurbar, and Jalgaon are set for moderate rain with gusty winds, while Marathwada and Central Maharashtra, including Ahmednagar, Solapur, Sangli, Aurangabad, Beed, Latur, Nanded, Hingoli, and Parbhani, may experience light to moderate showers with thunderstorms. Vidarbha, covering Nagpur, Akola, Amravati, Yavatmal, Wardha, Gondia, Bhandara, Gadchiroli, and Washim, is under a heavy rainfall warning.
This monsoon surge threatens to disrupt transportation, flood low-lying areas, and challenge agricultural stability. Authorities are urging residents to stay indoors and follow safety protocols as the state navigates this intense weather phase.
