Despite early monsoon, July rains have been weak in Maharashtra. Eight districts saw below-average rainfall, with Marathwada worst affected. Beed received only 25% of expected rain. Agricultural concerns deepen.
Maharashtra|July 18,2025: Despite an early monsoon arrival and overall average rainfall across Maharashtra, July has seen worrying dry spells in several regions. Between July 17 and 24, rains are expected to remain inactive, raising concern for farmers and water reservoirs.
While Maharashtra has received 4% more than average rainfall since June 1 and 2% above normal in July overall, eight districts have recorded below-average rainfall. Alarmingly, three districts are facing a severe shortfall.
The Konkan region, usually rain-rich, is witnessing a dip in rainfall. Mumbai city recorded a 23% deficit, while the suburbs saw 20% less rain than usual. Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg have also reported reduced rainfall.
In Marathwada, the situation is more critical. The region has received 46% less rain than average this season. Beed is the worst-affected, with just 25% of its normal rainfall. Other districts like Jalna, Hingoli, Parbhani, and Nanded are also facing serious shortages.
In Madhya Maharashtra, Ahmednagar, Satara, and Solapur are struggling, with Solapur receiving only 32% of expected rainfall. Vidarbha’s Akola, Amravati, and Washim too are lagging.
The past week’s figures are more alarming:
- Mumbai city: 71% below average
- Dhule: 80% below average
- Solapur: 70% below average
- Hingoli: 95% below average
- Jalna: 89% below average
- Parbhani: 91% below average
Experts say that unless there is substantial rainfall soon, the agricultural and water supply systems in affected areas could face serious strain.
