Mudra Scheme: Sowing the Seeds of India's Entrepreneurial Revolution
Delhi, 8th April 2025:
During his interaction with beneficiaries of the Mudra scheme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted how the initiative has opened doors for countless individuals to demonstrate their entrepreneurial capabilities. Addressing the gathering, he assured that the government would conduct a thorough review of the scheme in the coming days to further refine and enhance its effectiveness.
The numbers speak volumes about the scheme’s reach—an impressive 52 crore loan accounts have been sanctioned loans under Mudra so far, amounting to a staggering ₹33 lakh crore in disbursements. PM Modi emphasized how this flagship program has become a powerful instrument of grassroots empowerment, tracing its origins to his own activist days working for national development.
At its core, the Mudra scheme addresses a critical gap in India’s financial ecosystem by providing much-needed credit access to those traditionally excluded from formal lending channels. This financial inclusion initiative not only meets urgent capital requirements but also elevates living standards for beneficiaries across the socioeconomic spectrum.
The scheme’s robust performance metrics are particularly noteworthy—with only 3.5% of Mudra loans turning into non-performing assets. Significantly, half of all beneficiaries come from historically disadvantaged communities, including Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes. As PM Modi poignantly observed, each Mudra loan does more than provide funds—it delivers dignity, self-assurance, and life-changing opportunities to India’s aspiring entrepreneurs.
The Prime Minister’s remarks underscore how Mudra has evolved from a financial assistance program to a transformative movement, nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit at the very foundation of India’s economy while maintaining remarkable financial discipline. With plans for continuous improvement underway, the scheme appears poised to expand its impact even further in the years to come.
