Overwhelmed by low income and family responsibilities, 22-year-old Nandini Tiwari from Kanpur, working in Airoli, Mumbai, ended her life. A diary revealed her deep financial distress and despair.
Navi Mumbai | June 16, 2025: A 22-year-old woman who moved to Mumbai from Kanpur in the hope of supporting her financially struggling family has ended her life, overwhelmed by economic pressure and unfulfilled expectations.
Nandini Tiwari, originally from Kanpur, had come to Mumbai after completing her 12th standard, determined to ease her family’s burdens. She had taken up a private job that paid ₹12,000 a month and was staying as a paying guest with three other girls in Airoli. Unfortunately, her salary fell short of covering rent, daily expenses, and helping her parents—leaving her in deep distress.
Her neighbors, with whom she had developed friendly ties, grew suspicious when she remained unseen for two days and her room remained locked. On Sunday afternoon, using a duplicate key, they entered her flat and found her hanging in the hall. The Rabale police were immediately informed.
During the investigation, a personal diary was recovered in which Nandini had written about her inability to manage rent and her family’s needs with her limited salary. Assistant Police Inspector Vrushali Pawar confirmed that she had shared with a friend about returning to Kanpur due to her worsening depression caused by financial stress.
The police suspect that the unbearable weight of responsibility and constant disappointment led her to take this extreme step. A case has been registered at Rabale Police Station and further investigation is ongoing.
