In a significant boost for Mumbai’s overburdened suburban railway system, the central government has unveiled plans to double the number of local train services over the next three years, signaling a new era of convenience for the city’s millions of daily commuters.
This development comes on the heels of a recent accident in Mumbra that drew attention to passenger safety and system modernization. With support from both the state and central governments, sweeping reforms are now being introduced to overhaul the city’s local train infrastructure.
Among the major upgrades, all local trains will soon be equipped with automatic doors—a move aimed at enhancing commuter safety, especially during rush hours. The first local with this system is set for a trial run in November this year. Though there are differing political views on fully air-conditioning the local fleet, efforts are ongoing to increase the number of AC coaches where possible.
Currently, Mumbai sees around 3,200 local train trips each day. Plans are underway to add nearly 300 more trains in phases, with the goal of reducing congestion and wait times for commuters. In addition, work is being done to reduce the time interval between two trains from the current four minutes to just two and a half minutes through advanced signaling and new technology.
With ₹81,000 crore allocated for railway development in Maharashtra this year—₹16,000 crore of which is already being deployed in Mumbai and the MMR region—the city’s rail network is on the brink of transformation. The upcoming changes promise not only safer travel but also faster, more efficient daily journeys for the lifeline of Mumbai.
