Nagpur Central Jail inmate Tulsiram Shende died by suicide using underwear elastic. Serving a life sentence, he was found hanging, raising urgent concerns over prisoner safety and mental health support.
Nagpur | July 17 ,2025: Â Â Â A disturbing incident from Nagpur Central Jail has raised serious questions about inmate safety and mental health support inside high-security prisons. A life-term convict, Tulsiram Shende, died by suicide in the jail premises using the elastic band of his underwear.
According to police reports, Shende was found hanging near a window close to the godown area of the jail’s Painting Department. The noose was fashioned from the elastic of his own undergarment, indicating a deliberate and desperate act. The incident has sent shockwaves through the prison administration.
Shende, a native of Gondia district, was convicted in a murder case from Bhandara and sentenced to life imprisonment on June 30, 2024. He had been transferred to Nagpur Central Jail after his conviction and had been serving his term since.
Officials believe Shende may have been suffering from depression, as the life sentence had effectively ended his chances of freedom. The sense of hopelessness may have driven him to take this extreme step, though the exact motive is under investigation.
The fact that an inmate could commit suicide in such a closely monitored facility has raised eyebrows and triggered a review of prison safety protocols. Authorities are now under pressure to assess the mental health care provisions and security surveillance systems within the jail.
The Dhantoli police are continuing their investigation into the incident, while the prison department has also initiated an internal inquiry.
