On July 9, over 25 crore workers will strike nationwide against anti-worker policies, demanding wage hikes, pension revival, and job security. Major public services, banking, and transport may face disruption.

Maharashtra, 9 July 2025: On July 9, over 25 crore workers from across India will participate in a massive nationwide strike called by 10 central trade unions and their affiliated organizations. The strike is a protest against the central government’s policies, which the unions describe as anti-worker, anti-farmer, and pro-corporate. Major unions like AITUC, CITU, INTUC, HMS, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF, and UTUC have united for this strike. The movement is also being supported by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha and various agricultural labour unions, adding rural participation to the agitation.

The protesters are demanding the immediate withdrawal of the four new labour codes, which they believe will erode workers’ rights. Other key demands include the implementation of a minimum monthly wage of ₹26,000, reinstatement of the old pension scheme, abolishment of contractual employment, a ban on the privatization of government sectors, and the introduction of an unemployment allowance. The unions have accused the government of offering ₹17 lakh crore in benefits to large corporates while ignoring the needs of workers and farmers.

The strike is expected to disrupt services in sectors such as banking, insurance, postal services, coal mining, highways, construction, and public transport. Local trains and roadways in major cities may be affected, and normal functioning in banks and government offices is likely to be impacted.

As for schools and colleges, no formal decision has been announced yet. Local administrations are expected to assess the situation and make appropriate decisions based on public safety and order.

This nationwide shutdown is one of the largest industrial actions in recent years, and all eyes will be on whether the government initiates any dialogue or concessions in response to the mounting pressure.
