An ambulance service in Vashi allegedly charged ₹4,000 for shifting a patient just 100 meters using only a stretcher, prompting public anger, a police complaint, and demand for regulatory action.
Navi Mumbai, June 8, 2025: A shocking case of alleged overcharging by an ambulance service in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, has triggered public outrage after it was revealed that ₹4,000 was charged for shifting a patient just 100 meters—and that too, without using the ambulance vehicle.
According to Himanshu Patil, who has filed a formal complaint with Vashi Police Station, the incident took place between 7:30 PM and 8:30 PM on June 8. A patient was being transferred from Fortis Hospital to Namupa Hospital, a short distance of approximately 100 meters. However, instead of using the ambulance, the patient was shifted solely on a stretcher, yet the family was charged the full ambulance fee.
Patil has also submitted video evidence of the incident, demanding strict police action for what he called a case of blatant exploitation of patients and families during critical times.
The Vashi police have registered a complaint and assured that an in-depth investigation will be carried out. The submitted video footage is likely to be crucial in determining whether fraud or malpractice occurred.
This isn’t an isolated case. Multiple citizens in Navi Mumbai have previously raised concerns over exorbitant charges by private ambulance operators, many of whom allegedly exploit emergency situations to make quick profits. The current incident has reignited discussions on the lack of regulation and pricing control in private ambulance services.
As public frustration grows, citizens are now demanding intervention from the Health Department, RTO, and Municipal Corporation to ensure fair practices. On social media, voices are rising for price capping and mandatory service standards to prevent exploitation.
This incident serves as a grim reminder of how some service providers prioritize profit over humanity, even in moments of medical emergency. The public now waits to see if authorities will take decisive action to prevent such unethical practices in the future.
