A new high-speed double railway line from Ahilyanagar to Pune will cut travel time to 1.5 hours. Twelve stations planned across four talukas; project to complete in four years.
Ahilyanagar | August 4, 2025: To ease growing traffic congestion between Ahilyanagar (Ahmednagar) and Pune—a key urban corridor in Maharashtra—a new parallel double railway line will be constructed alongside the highway. The proposed high-speed rail line will drastically reduce the travel time from the current 3–4 hours by road to just 1.5 hours by rail.
The Pune division of Central Railway is leading this ambitious infrastructure project. The Konkan Railway Corporation Limited has submitted the final project report (DPR), confirming the land survey is complete. The 98-kilometer-long track will feature 12 new stations, including two major hubs at Ranjangaon MIDC and Supe MIDC. Other stations will include Loni Kalbhor, Kolavadi, Wagholi, Vadhu, Jategaon, Kohkadi, Kamargaon, Chas, and Ahilyanagar.
The train will operate at a maximum speed of 160 km/h, and the total project duration is estimated at four years. A total of 785.898 hectares of land will be acquired across four talukas—Haveli, Shirur, Parner, and Ahilyanagar—with Shirur taluka requiring the largest share of land. The acquisition will involve a combination of private, forest, and government lands.
Currently, trains heading north from Pune go via Daund to reach Ahilyanagar, causing delays. With the completion of this new route, the connectivity will be more direct and efficient. In addition to this project, the Railway Board is also considering two more expansions: one from Talegaon to Uruli and another from Pune to Ahilyanagar, as part of a larger push to upgrade regional railway infrastructure.
The project is expected to transform the travel experience between Pune and Ahilyanagar, easing road congestion and enabling faster, more comfortable journeys.
