Newlywed woman Chhakuli Kedar died by suicide in Shahapur after dowry harassment. Husband Kailas Harad arrested. Family alleges demands for ₹1 lakh and ₹20 lakh. Police investigation is ongoing.
Thane | July 15, 2025 —An appalling incident of dowry-related harassment has come to light from Shahapur taluka in Thane district, where a 22-year-old newly married woman died by suicide just two months after her wedding. The Kinhavali police have registered a case and arrested the woman’s husband.
The deceased, Chhakuli Balkrishna Kedar, a resident of Pimpalghar village in Murbad’s Dhasai section, was married on May 1, 2025, to Kailas Harad of Kharivli village in Shahapur taluka. According to her family, Chhakuli endured severe mental and physical harassment at the hands of her husband and in-laws shortly after the marriage.
Her mother, Ranjana Balkrishna Kedar, stated in her police complaint that the harassment was primarily due to relentless dowry demands. Initially, the accused family allegedly demanded ₹1 lakh from Chhakuli, pressuring her to get the money from her father. When she couldn’t meet the demand, the abuse intensified.
The situation worsened when the accused allegedly demanded ₹20 lakh to purchase a flat. “Bring ₹20 lakh from your father,” they allegedly told her. Chhakuli reportedly pleaded with them, explaining that her father merely runs a vadapav stall and couldn’t afford such an amount. Despite this, the harassment continued unabated.
Unable to bear the trauma, Chhakuli took her own life at her marital home. Following her mother’s complaint, a case has been registered at the Kinhavali Police Station, and husband Kailas Harad has been arrested. Further investigations are underway.
This tragic incident has sparked outrage in the region and renewed calls for stricter enforcement of laws against dowry and domestic abuse.
