Addicted to online rummy, Khardi resident Rishikesh Benke turned to train thefts to manage debt. Kalyan GRP arrested him after multiple robberies between Kalyan and Kasara stations. Investigation continues.
Kalyan | 25 July, 2025: The dangerous grip of online rummy has once again ruined a life—this time leading a young man from Khardi to crime. Kalyan GRP police have arrested Rishikesh Benke, a Raswanti Griha (sugarcane juice stall) owner, for snatching jewelry from women aboard local trains. His addiction to online rummy and mounting debts drove him to this path, police said.
For the past several days, passengers traveling between Kalyan and Kasara stations reported multiple thefts, particularly of gold jewelry snatched from women while trains were in motion between Khardi and Kasara. The incidents left the railway police puzzled and alarmed.
Senior Inspector Pandharinath Kande of Kalyan GRP formed two dedicated teams to track down the thief. CCTV footage eventually revealed a suspect running in the opposite direction of a moving train. Based on local intelligence, the suspect was identified as a resident of Khardi.
When the police reached the location, they confirmed that the man in the CCTV was Rishikesh Benke. His Raswanti stall had been shut down due to the monsoon, and to cope with rising debt from excessive online rummy gambling, he resorted to robbing female passengers.
Benke was arrested and is currently in police custody. Authorities are investigating whether he was involved in more such crimes. The case has reignited concerns over the social impact of online rummy, which continues to ruin lives despite repeated warnings and examples.
